Miami Beach Mayor Wants Feds To Investigate Seminole Gaming Compact Corruption

The ink isn’t even dry of the Seminole Gaming Compact with the state of Florida, but already there are political challenges being raised. That agreement paves the way for sports betting in the state. But the mayor of Miami Beach has voiced his concerns that the agreement is corrupted, and he wants the Federal Government to kill the deal.

The U.S. Department of the Interior must approve the agreement since it involves a Native American tribe. And the Miami Beach mayor believes that the new compact between the Seminoles and the state has been corrupted and hijacked by politicians with “non-tribal casino interests”. The Governor of Florida responded to the mayor’s statements, calling them “Pure, idiotic politics”. And he challenged the mayor to point out any part of the agreement that had been ‘hijacked’.

So what now? Well, we know that the Seminole Gaming Compact will be closely examined by officials at the Department of the Interior. We trust that they will spot anything that is “corrupted”, as well as any parts of the agreement which may be a problem. We will report on what happens next.

Shreveport Casinos and Health Advocates Prep for August Smoking Ban

Advocates for smoke-free casinos and bars met in Shreveport this week to prepare the northwest Louisiana city for a smoking ban beginning Aug. 1

In June 2020, the Shreveport City Council passed an ordinance banning smoking in bars, casinos, and gaming facilities, according to the Shreveport Times.

Representatives of Smoke-Free Louisiana and the Region 7 Louisiana Healthy Communities Coalition met at the Sand Bar in downtown Shreveport on June 3 to answer questions about the upcoming ban.

The Smoke Free Air Act was to take effect in August 2020. However, the City County, concerned about job losses at Shreveport Casinos during the coronavirus pandemic, pushed the ban for casinos back to Aug. 1, 2021, according to Biz magazine. Some officials expressed concern that smokers would bypass Shreveport casinos and go to nearby resorts where smoking isn’t banned.

“We can talk about secondhand smoke all day long in these casinos and what it does to the employees. But if those employees don’t have a job, it’s going to be worse,” Councilman Grayson Boucher said last year.

Louisiana has 13 riverboat casinos, one land-based casino in New Orleans, and four racinos. Throughout the state, numerous bars and truck stops are equipped with video poker machines.

Two riverboat casinos are on the Red River in Shreveport, according to the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau website. The gambling halls and horse track east of the Red River in Bossier City and elsewhere in the Shreveport Casinos area would not be required to abide by the Shreveport smoking ban.

‘Reduced Consumer Demand’

Shreveport is the 30th municipality in Louisiana to implement “a comprehensive smoke-free ordinance,” said Randy Hayden, a Louisiana-based consultant for Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights.

Quite a few states have already passed the statewide laws, and other states are doing what Louisiana is doing, which that is kind of nickel and diming it, community by community,” Hayden told the Shreveport Times. Hayden is president of Creative Communications in Baton Rouge.

Louisiana’s largest cities with casinos, including Baton Rouge and New Orleans, already have passed ordinances banning smoking in casinos. Lake Charles is the most populous city in Louisiana without a smoke-free ordinance to include casinos and bars, according to the newspaper.

Some Shreveport Casinos contend that gamblers who like to smoke won’t go to casinos where it is banned. Wade Duty, executive director of the Louisiana Casino Association, told Casino.org that smoking bans lead to “reduced consumer demand” for casino gambling.

Smoking Bans in Las Vegas

In Las Vegas, Park MGM on the Strip banned smoking last fall after “continued guest requests,” according to Anton Nikodemus, an MGM Resorts executive. NoMad Las Vegas, a luxury “hotel-within-a-hotel” at Park MGM, also has banned smoking.

Park MGM and NoMad are among a small number of casinos on the Strip either to ban or limit smoking.

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas last year banned smoking from some public spaces, but not the gaming floor. When Resorts World Las Vegas opens on the Strip on June 24, it will be smoke-free throughout the property except inside the casino, President Scott Sibella told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Hayden told Casino.org that younger casino patrons are health conscious and don’t want to work or gamble in smoke-filled settings. With hundreds of casinos now located across the country, patrons can choose nonsmoking resorts close to home, he said.

“Gamblers now recognize they can locally have a ‘what happens in Vegas’ outing and not have to choke their way through that experience,” Hayden said.

Mac King Moves to Excalibur After 22 Years at Harrah’s

The times they are a-changin’ in the world of Las Vegas shows, and there’s no better illustration than legendary comedy-magician Mac King moving to Excalibur after 20-plus years at Harrah’s Las Vegas.

Mac King launches his show in the Thunderland Showroom at Excalibur on June 22, 2021.

We know Mac King, and we’d bet he didn’t ask for the airbrushing. It was the hamster.

The Thunderland Showroom also hosts the Thunder From Down Under male revue and Australian Bee Gees show, one of the best tribute shows in town. Hans Klok also performed in the venue for a minute.

King’s show has been dark since the start of the pandemic, and the change of venue follows on the heels of a major entertainment shake-up at Caesars Entertainment.

Several smaller venues on The Strip have shut down, including Cleopatra’s Barge at Caesars Palace, the Chippendales Theater at Rio and Anthony Cools Experience Theater at Paris, as
Caesars shifts its focus to gambling following the merger with Eldorado Resorts.

King says the decision to move wasn’t related to the entertainment cuts at Caesars Entertainment, but that doesn’t mean there was no drama, he’s just too much of a gentleman to talk about it. Mac King is classy like that.

Mac King

We used a special lens to make Mac King less invisible.

Mac King’s family-friendly comedy-magic show is one of the best entertainment values in Las Vegas (tickets start at $44.95), and it truly is fun for all ages. Learn more and get tickets.

King’s comedic talents belie his magic prowess, but he’s known as “a magician’s magician,” respected and admired by some of the most popular and successful magicians in the world.

Beyond the quality of the show, Mac King is just an all-around good guy, and we’re happy to see he’s found a new home for his hijinks. Or possibly mischief. But definitely monkey business.

We almost said “skylarking,” but that just results in blank stares from the youths.

Mac King shower cap

We once did a story about alternate uses for hotel shower caps. Mac King and his goldfish helped.

Anyway, Mac King’s new show at Excalibur happens at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., dark Sundays and Mondays.

Mac King’s longevity in Las Vegas is a testament to his talent and work ethic. We’ve never heard anyone speak ill of him, and that’s extraordinarily rare in Las Vegas entertainment circles.

Long live the King.

Mac King is on our short list of must-see Las Vegas shows.

If you’ve seen it before, now’s a great chance to check it out again. If you’ve never seen it, you really need to question your life decisions and get your ass to Excalibur.

Mac King is going to be skylarking the hell out of the place.

Las Vegas Sands CEO Goldstein Admits Macau is Slow, Wants US Exposure

Las Vegas Sands in Macau
Las Vegas Sands CEO Rob Goldstein. He’s frustrated by the rebound pace in Macau, says company still committed to US. (Image: Bloomberg)

In remarks made at the virtual Bernstein Annual Strategic Decisions Conference earlier this week, the Las Vegas Sands boss expressed disappointment that the special administrative region (SAR) isn’t bouncing back from the coronavirus pandemic more rapidly, but added that he respects local and mainland China authorities decision to prioritize stamping out COVID-19.

We are disappointed… we were hoping for a quicker recovery,” said Goldstein at the Bernstein conference.

He added that the zero-tolerance policy regarding the virus taken by both Macau and mainland officials is understandable, and that Las Vegas Sands has “no concerns about long-term demand” in the gaming hub.

A recent spike in coronavirus cases in neighboring Guangdong province is prompting more travel protocols, hampering Macau’s rebound efforts in the process.

Sands Macau, Singapore Data

In the first three months of this year, Las Vegas Sands tourist traffic was just 16 percent of the level seen in the same period of 2019. However, LVS noted mass market play was 38 percent of what it was in the first quarter of 2019.

A return to normal there is vital to Las Vegas Sands because Macau is the operator’s most important market and it controls five integrated resorts there. An important point in the company’s favor is that the bulk of its Macau clientele are mass and premium mass players. That provides some insulation from volatility in the VIP segment, which is proving slower to recover.

In Singapore, where LVS runs Marina Bay Sands (MBS), Goldstein said support from local gamblers is robust. But he expects that trend to wane as the city-state loosens travel protocols and allows citizens to travel outside the country and international visitors in.

Singapore locals generally prefer slots to table games, indicating MBS table profits could be slack until more international travelers are permitted to visit the country. Macau and Singapore are integral to LVS because, pending the sale of its Las Vegas assets, it has no domestic exposure.

US Comments

For the time being, Sands’ hopes of bringing an integrated resort to the potentially lucrative Texas market are dashed. That’s because the effort recently failed in the state legislature. Additionally, plans for a New York City casino — a process in which LVS was rumored to be a bidder — are on hold because of political haranguing.

Still, Goldstein said at the Bernstein conference that the company remains committed to the US. He added LVS wants to be in the online gaming arena, and that desire expands beyond US borders to include Canada, Europe, and South America.

While noting China is highly unlikely to consider legalized internet casinos, he didn’t specify how LVS will pursue iGaming, or whether that move will include acquisitions.

iGamingBusiness Hosts Webinar on the Evolving Role of eSports Betting

On May 25, iGamingBusiness hosted a webinar discussing “The role of eSports in the evolving land-based sector.” The webinar offered insight from Seth Schorr, Chairman of the Downtown Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, and Jennifer Roberts, the General Counsel at WynnBET, on the growing importance of eSports in existing land-based casino establishments.

As the only major competitive sporting event during the COVID-19 pandemic, eSports witnessed significant growth in 2020. Most of this growth, however, occurred online, leading land-based casinos to search for new ways to integrate these activities into their operations. The unique ability to simultaneously bet on eSports competitions in-person and online has encouraged casinos to find the best way to appeal to customers on both fronts.

On the digital front, Ms. Roberts emphasized the ability of brick-and-mortar casinos to attract players through their brands’ existing reputations. In this way, casinos can extend their existing luxury and hospitality experiences into the digital realm to attract players.

Brick and mortar casinos face a different challenge in their efforts to draw eSports fans into their establishments. Mr. Schorr and Ms. Roberts both urge casinos to focus on developing amenities and accommodations that cater to the new, often younger generation of gamer-guests. Whether offering low-cost food options or streaming eSports competitions in casino restaurants and bars, according to Ms. Roberts, operators “must understand the audience.”

The cycle from gaming demand to integrated betting community adds another dimension to the challenge of attracting eSports fans into casinos. Ms. Roberts commented on the “vicious cycle” that relies on strong consumer demand. Without high levels of demand, operators will lack the drive to seek approval for eSports betting events. And without regulatory approval, eSports betting will remain an elusive opportunity for brick-and-mortar casinos.

To generate the requisite demand for eSports betting, Mr. Schorr expressed the importance of investing in media that showcases the excitement of eSports betting in a manner that appeals to eSports fans. Effective media, according to Mr. Schorr, must highlight the ways in which casinos have adapted to the habits of eSports fans, for example, by enabling interactive in-game betting, rather than single pre-game bets.

The legalization and regulation of eSports betting remains another essential step in attracting gamers into casinos. By promoting customer safety and ensuring game integrity, a regulated eSports betting industry will play a key role in turning an eSports fan into an eSports betting fan, according to Mr. Schorr.

Ultimately, the transition from eSports as an online-only betting experience to a brick-and-mortar casino attraction will depend on responsive marketing and regulatory efforts. And, as Ms. Roberts affirmed, it is “more than just games, but amenities that [will] appeal to the customer.”

Ohio Senate Working on Sports Betting Legislation

On May 6, Ohio Senators Kirk Schuring, Niraj Antani, and Nathan Manning introduced SB 176 to legalize and regulate sports gaming in the State. The proposed bill is the culmination of the Senate Select Committee on Gaming’s series of hearings regarding the expansion of gaming in Ohio and represents the diverse views of professional sports teams, local businesses, state lottery officials, and large casino operators.

SB 176 includes 40 sportsbook licenses. Twenty licenses are considered Type A online licenses that can be issued to Ohio’s eleven existing casinos or racinos. Type A licensees are required to contract with online sportsbook operators, and there is no limit to the number of operators a licensee can partner with. The remaining twenty licenses are considered Type B retail licenses for brick-and-mortar sportsbooks, such as those in bars, restaurants, bowling allies, or other small businesses.

During the Committee’s May 12 hearing on the bill, SB 176 was amended to allow any entity, including Ohio casinos and racinos, to apply for Type B licenses. However, these retail licenses were likely meant to appease concerned small business stakeholders that consider sports betting a new source of revenue. According to an Action Network article, the Committee clarified that non-gaming entities can qualify for Type A online licenses as long as they have or can create a “substantial presence” in Ohio.

The bill would allow the Ohio Casino Control Commission to administer all 40 licenses, each at a cost of $1 million, renewable every three years. SB 176 also proposes to tax net sports betting revenues at 10%. Most tax revenue would be directed towards education, while 2% would be reserved for addiction and problem gambling services.

In addition to the legalization of sports betting, SB 176 would authorize the Ohio Lottery Commission to offer $20 betting pools that allow participants to wager on the outcome of games. Winnings would be equally divided among the winners less the Commission’s 10% take.

SB 176 would also permit electronic bingo at veteran’s and fraternal organizations. And, the bill proposes the creation of a Select Committee on iLottery that will study the “potential effect of online lottery ticket sales on retail lottery ticket sales” in Ohio.

Ultimately, SB 176 represents comprehensive gaming expansion in Ohio. Senator Schuring hopes that the bill ushers in “broad-based economic development.” An Action Network article reported that, according to the Senator, SB 176 is “free market driven, and comes with oversight from existing Ohio agencies with gaming experience to make sure Ohioans are not being taken advantage of by illegal gaming.”

Las Vegas Is Ready For The Wynn Buffet Return On July 1st

There’s a lot going on at Wynn and Encore, including the return of the resort’s popular buffet.

The Wynn Buffet reopens July 1, 2021, according to the company.

Wynn Buffet

Let’s just say The Buffet at Wynn isn’t your typical Las Vegas buffet.

Following an extended closure due to the pandemic, Wynn tried reopening the buffet back in June 2020, but the effort was short-lived.

Guests didn’t take to a served buffet, preferring a “traditional buffet experience” (serving themselves), so Wynn closed up shop again in Sep. 2020.

Now, the buffet will be back as self-serve, the way Mother Nature, in all her bloated glory, intended.

Also up at Wynn and Encore, valet parking services will be back in mid-June.

The resort’s new restaurant, Delilah, opens July 14.

Delilah is a “modern-day supper club,” and will feature a “troupe of female dancers moving to the sounds of a live jazz band.”

Delilah is in the former Alex space.

The menu for Delilah isn’t available yet, but if you’re into the supper club thing, feel free to visit the official Web page and hit refresh until it appears.

Delilah Wynn Las Vegas

Delilah’s dress code will be “smart casual.” Translation: No clothes that attended public school allowed.

Finally, Wynn Resorts announced Encore will now be dog-friendly.

Guests can now bring up to two dogs, and the pampered pooches will get a doggy bag of welcome gifts including a neckerchief with the Wynn logo, a toy and dog treat.

The hotel will offer canine guests “Bone Appetite, the new room service doggy dining menu.”

Dog-focused clothing and accessories (like Wynn-branded leashes, collars and bowls) will be available for purchase, and there will even be a Wynn Resorts signature robe, an exact replica of its human-sized counterpart.

Happy dog

We took this photo at the Animal Foundation shelter, and are always looking for an excuse to share it again.

Wynn Resorts recently shared it has maintained its Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star awards for 2021. The company holds the most Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star awards of any independent hotel company. This distinction is all the more impressive because it was earned during a flipping pandemic.

Company officials say the resort’s hotels have had 90-98% occupancy on weekends of late, a strong sign Las Vegas is back, even before international travel (a significant source of business for Wynn Resorts) resumes.

It’s worth noting that while other Strip resorts are bringing back paid parking (including Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts), we’ve heard about no such plans at Wynn and Encore. Parking remains free.

Wynn parking

The best kind of parking machines are the ones where there’s no place to stick in your credit card.

Now, you know what’s up at Wynn and Encore.

We can’t wait to hit the Wynn Buffet again, and we’re happy to hear all the buffet employees will be back to work to deliver one of the best-reviewed buffets in Las Vegas.

Looking At The Differences Between Land Based Casinos v Online Casinos

Casinos have been a part of our entertainment industry for a long time dating back to ancient China. As the games have progressed in modern times, players have enjoyed gambling in cash or casino chips. The main reasons for the popularity of casinos are not only because of the ability for people to win money, but for their entertainment reasons. As the industry has grown more people have also moved from land casinos to playing online. There are a mix of benefits to the players whether they play online or in a casino building.

When online casinos started becoming very popular, most people assumed that the new way of gambling spelled doom for land-based casinos. This is because an online casino provides the gambling thrill that players seek, along with great convenience in that users can play from their living room. On top of that, live dealer games also came up to make the experience as authentic as possible.

However, it has already been proven that online and land-based casinos can co-exist, and in fact, can complement each other. What can’t be denied is that they have affected how in-house casinos operate. Here are a few ways in which online casinos have affected land-based casinos.

Playing in a land-based casino has been popular with many people for a long time due to the social aspect of being able to go into a live and exciting casino. Enjoying the buzz of Poker, slot machines and Blackjack tables full of excited and chattering people. Taking part in the act of traveling to a casino with friends, or by yourself whilst knowing that there will be plenty of people to connect with when you get there. Entering the building and hearing the loud pinging of the slot machines and walking past serious poker faces around the Blackjack and Poker tables.

There is the hum of excitement and expectancy of a big win …
